History of the Bridal Shower

Legend has it that the first bridal shower was given for a Dutch bride with a broken heart.

Her father had refused to give her a dowry because she intended to marry a poor miller. The lovers married despite the threat of poverty, and the groom's friends pitched in and "showered" the bride with gifts of household necessities for their new home. Thanks to the shower, the bride's heart was mended -- and her cupboard was stocked.

That generous practice has become a wedding tradition, occasionally snowballing into multiple showers given by friends, bridesmaids, business associates, and both families.

Bridal Shower
Back in the days when weddings were arranged by family members, it is said that a poor Dutchman fell in love with a girl whose father refused her a dowry. Their friends showered her with enough gifts to help them start a household. According to another story, the first "Bridal Shower" occurred at the end of the 19th century. At a party, the Bride's friends placed small gifts inside a parasol and opened it over the Bride's head. When she opened the parasol, she was "showered" with presents!

A Marriage Celebrates a New Beginning /Bridal Shower

A marriage celebrates a new beginning:
A couple starting out as man and wife.
A shower celebrates a happy ending:
The last days of a woman's single life.
The wide world now has narrowed to a garden
In which I will my pleasures plant and reap.
The outlines of my character will harden
According to the promises I keep.
My joy will soon become a melody
In counterpoint to those for whom I care,
Seeking a profounder harmony
Than any I alone could know or bear.
So shall I find a greater grace within.
One life is over: Let the new begin!

Engagement Party

My maid of honour Lilia a good friend of ours gave us an engagement party at her house. It was my birthday as well so we celebrated at the same time . We had a great time.

BRIDAL SHOWERS
Brad’s Aunts Nancy and Liz, with his sister Julia and his grandmother hosted a bridal shower in Hamilton. Mary who was one of my bridesmaids hosted a shower for me at her place as well.

BUCK AND DOE
Lilia and the other bridesmaids hosted a buck and doe party for us in the park. We had a picnic dinner with games. It was a beautiful day and we had a great time. Brad’s family came from Hamilton to be there. We were surprised to see Graham Brad’s brother who came there all the way from Montreal.
